Obviously with a name like Commercial Boat Design, we are involved in the design of a variety of new vessels – be they ferries, patrol boats, fireboats, passenger charter boats or any number of other commercial or government vessels. As this video shows it's not all we do.
Our high level skills in naval architecture and mechanical engineering, backed by countless years experience in vessel construction and operation, also enable us to provide consultancy services across a range of areas: stability assessment, structural design and analysis, seakeeping evaluations, finite element analysis (FEA), computation fluid dynamics (CFD), vessel modification and conversion advice, and vessel performance improvement advice to name a few.

At CBD we are not just aluminium catamaran designers. Case in point: this ultra-fast patrol boat design developed in conjunction with Commercial Marine Australia for use in Equatorial waters such as in South East Asia, Central America, the Middle East or Africa.
This 18.4 metre monohull can reach 60 knots with its twin diesel / waterjet propulsion. Carrying five crew and eight additional personnel in the below decks cabin, even cruising at 45 knots it has a range in excess of 300 nautical miles.
Features include a folding bow ramp for troop deployment, stabilized remote weapon system with 7.62mm machine gun forward, and twin machine gun mounts aft.

Bello!
New Team Member – Angelo Finocchiaro
With our workload increasing as a result of a number of new projects, Commercial Boat Design has welcomed talented designer Angelo Finocchiaro to our team.
Having worked at a number of shipyards Angelo has significant production design experience, and also contributes exceptional 3D modelling and drafting skills to bolster our existing capacities in those areas.
Now in a permanent role, Angelo previously provided CBD with rendering and styling services on an as needs contract basis.
We are very excited to have him onboard.

New Contract Announcement
In November 2021, we mentioned Commercial Boat Design had been tank testing a 30m catamaran design. We are excited to now be able to announce that the design, which we developed in close cooperation with Alboom Marine Kuwait and LOÇA Shipyard Turkey, is being used for two 30m, FiFi 1 Class Fire and Rescue Catamarans for the Kuwait Fire Force. The aluminium multihulls will have twin MTU engines providing power for the firefighting system (supplied by Jason Engineering) and the MJP waterjets.
See the video for more details and follow us for updates.

Last month we mentioned Commercial Boat Design has been tank testing a new design at the Australian Maritime College and promised a few more details. Well, this latest refinement of our unique hullform is a 30 metre LOA, 9.0 metre beam semi-displacement catamaran, the design and testing of which was commissioned by Kuwait's Al Boom Marine AlBoom MarAlboomKuwaituwait)
While we can't tell you the details of the application just yet, the testing was incredibly successful demonstrating the design will be able to better 26 knots (loaded) with under 1700kW. This testing verifies the benefits of Commercial Boat Design's continuous research and development into new hullforms, and builds on our already class-leading efficiency for catamarans in this size range.

Hard to believe it is already three years since our second catamaran for the MONA ferry service operated by Navigators / Roche Bros in Hobart was launched by Richardson Devine Marine.
At 29 metres and 190 passengers Freya, aka MR-2, is the little sister to Ena (aka MR-1) which was built to our design in 2013. Its success led to Commercial Boat Design being commissioned to design Freya, both to meet expanding demand for transport to and from MONA - Museum of Old and New Art as well as other services such as an After Hours Ferry and onboard functions cruising the Derwent River.
Beneath its unique, highly customised external and internal styling, Freya is a highly efficient platform that proves you don't have to choose between form and functiHard toaHard to believeuHard to believe iu#maritimeiHard tfHard to rHard to believe it sHard to believe eHard to beleHard to belieeHard to beleHard to believe itc#navalarchitectiHard to belielHard to belielHard to bem#multihullihull

With alternative, green technologies being a major focus on the moment, it's timely that we release a few details of an interesting project we have been working on for Hydrogen Integration Technologies (HIT).
As you may guess, this 12 metre, 50 passenger catamaran's propulsion system will be solely fuelled by hydrogen, making its operation 100% carbon free. Developed by Commercial Boat Design over a period of more than 12 months, the ferry / water taxi will be built from aluminium by Wildcat Marine and meet Australian survey requirements.
If you are interested in innovative, climate-friendly vessels for any application please get in touch to discuss the possibilities, and stay tuned for details of a larger With alternatibWith alternativenWith alternative, c#navalarchitectlWith alte With alternative,eWith aeWith ar#environmentallyfriendlyl#environmentallyfriendlyl#environmentnWith alternativnWith alternative, grsWith tWith alternbWith alternsWith alternatisWith alternativenWith aleWith alternativnWith alternativn#maritime #maritimeindustrymeindustry

It's always great to meet and catch up in person with others in our industry, especially given how many online meetings we have all had in the past 18 months or so.
Prior to the latest lockdown in our home city of Melbourne, Commercial Boat Design was model testing a new hull design at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) towing tank in Launceston, Tasmania. While there our Managing Director, Kim Chamberlin, and Technical Director, Stuart Bloomfield, were pleased to meet up with Professor Jonathan Binns (Professor of Hydrodynamics in Naval Architecture for the AMC and Director of the ARC Research Training Centre for Naval Design and Manufacturing) and Wilson Yau, Overseas Sales Director for aluminium company Press Metal International Technology (who kindly sent us this photo).
Here's to continuing fruitful collaborations in the future...and watch this space for more about the new design.

Innovation is a focus for Commercial Boat Design. One passenger vessel example was for a proposed river ferry service on a waterway constrained by very low bridges and wake wash environmental limits. While other naval architects said it couldn't be done, we produced this highly innovative, ultra low air draft, and low wash ferry design.
More than a concept, this trimaran ferry was developed right through the preliminary design stage after being selected by the service proponent through a competitive evaluation process. Times being as they are the public transit system plans have not yet come to fruition but the design is ready to go. What's the capacity! Should have some it to NSW for the replacements they messed up!
I am absolutely in love with this concept. What's the passenger capacity and top speed as a commercial ferry operator?
